It’s always best to use gender neutral language when talking to or referring to a guest. For example, if you call someone “ma’am” who identifies as a male, that will negatively color a guest’s whole experience with us. As an organization that is expanding its audiences, it’s important we are aware that what’s historically been used to show politeness—calling a guest “sir” or “ma’am” — can actually be hurtful or disrespectful if used inappropriately. This website sheds some light on the subject if this is new information to you. I’m also attaching our diversity & inclusion notes from our training session earlier this year as a refresher.
